Wi-fi Speakers - Internet Connection on TV?

Do I need my television connected to the internet to use wifi speakers?

We have Direct Tv service because that is all that is available in our area. At the present time they are unable to provide us with a wifi connection due to some flub in their system. We had been connected, but now are not.

We would like to get wireless speakers, but don't know how they work nor if they will work if our tv is not connected to wifi. I do have wifi I. Our home, just cannot be synced to the tv right now due to the direct tv issues.
