Sorry, cyRtostachys...

Has anyone grown it in California? Is it worth trying it (San Diego, SE exposure, beach area)?

no... FAR too tropical for anywhere in California... even in Florida can only be grown well near the southern tip. Does great in Hawaii though

The website of TopTropicals states they have a cold tolerant variety.

Hah... no such thing. But you should try it anyway.. every one told me this and that palm were too wimpy but I tried them all anyway... best to learn what can and can't be grown personally or you 1) will never believe it for sure, and 2) every once in a while you will discover something CAN survive here.
