Marguerite 'Red Star'!
No spikes yet though.
I got my first Masdevallia!
That's exciting. Post a photo when it blooms. I'm trying a Masdevallia again. I haven't been too successful with them in the past. I don't think I have provided high enough humidity or managed to keep them moist enough.
Good luck!

Oh, I hope you love it. I have loved all of mine. Pleurothallids are at the top of my list of favorites. Usually these are way less temperamental than Draculas which do a speedy swan song for me. Masdies can grow without a swamp cooler here but not Draculas. Where did you get it from?
I Laurel,
I got it at a giant orchid sale in Sacramento, CA last spring. It made it through the summer and now for the winter...... I think it's red. I wanted to try the classic and if it does well, get another.
I looked up Pleurothallid and found the Pleurothallid Alliance. Those are some wild and crazy orchids. They look like fun.
My current wild and crazy is Psychopsis mendenhall, blooming for the first time. Yeh!

MaypopLaurel,
I got it from TheorchidGallery on eBay. $21.
Thursday night at our orchid society meeting, our guest speaker was a guy who is growing species orchids. His whole thing is conservation and preservation of the originals. He gave a great talk (we especially liked the part when he said if you can't keep your humidity high enough, add more plants).
Today, he invited us all over to his lab (he is an air quality specialist - think MOLD) for a giant going out of business sale. He is returning to Canada and can't take any plants with him. Most of his plants are his own crosses or plants that are species (but not the modern versions). He gave me one Thursday that he says was first collected in 1880 and this is a division of a plant he can track back at least 100 years. I guess I never thought about it but when new plants are discovered, someone immediately starts improving it. The name is the same but the plant is different. He is on a mission to save the originals.
Fun, fun, fun day.
