The "driest place on earth" got some rain.

I remember going through the desert (can't remember exactly where, somewhere in western US, probably Texas) after a rain and the flowers in the desert were phenomenal.

The Atacama desert has that beat by a mile.

Wow, thanks for the link. I traveled through that area 20 years ago and it looked, at that time, like the driest place on earth. Awe inspiring for sure, but dry.

That's just beautiful, the first photograph is stunning. I noticed they wouldn't give us a close up-in-focus shot of the flower. I guess they want to promote tourism and have everyone experience the mudslides and floods.

It also sounds like they just slipped in the fact that it happened twice in one year, almost like that part was no big deal (creative writing).

"The intensity of blooms this year has no precedent," Diaz said. "And the fact that it has happened twice in a same year has never been recorded in the country's history. We are surprised."
