Straw bale gardening question

Hagerstown, MD

Hi I am new to this group, and gardening..... I am going to start a straw bale garden next spring.i have been reading about conditioning the bales two weeks before planting. My question is can I go ahead and get my straw bales now and let them sit out in the snow, rain, and sun? Would they condition on there own? .... And then in spring time just add fertilizer? Or should I wait till spring to buy them and condition them?

The reason I am asking is because I figured it would be easier to have the bales at my house and set up and waiting for spring. I sat up a four 55 Gallon rain barrels and figured I would go ahead and plumb for my drip irrigation as well.

Thank you, Randy

They will tend to rot, sag, fall apart with that long exposure to the elements. Might not then last through the season to grow the crops. I would hold off.
