i've spent the last 8 years in Senegal (west Africa) and the last 5 trying to make a tropical garden
the weather here is pretty harsh... 9-10 months with no water at all and 2-3 months with tropical rains (this year we are swamped)
No winter, the coldest temp at night are around 15c (I think it's aprox 60f) but that does not last very long
days are around 25-30c (80-90f) in the shade, that's what we call winter
My soil is mostly sand and salt as I am right there by a laguna full of sea water for 6 to 9 months of the year and dry the rest of the time

Wow. I am not going to complain about this clay soil.
You haven't said how your garden is doing after 5 years and those challenges.
