Pin Cherry?

East Bridgewater, MA

There were a bunch of these on Duxbury Beach in MA at a friend's cottage. I rarely see Pin Cherries this size, but there was nothing to outgrow them here. Does this look good for a Pin? Maybe it's aChoke Cherry instead?

I'm skeptical that this is a Prunus sp. of any kind.

Looks much more like a typical invasive Rhamnus (syn. Frangula) sp.

Hmmm, I never thought of that... But aren't these leaves too pointy and serrated? Also, do the berries of the Alder Buckthorn have pits, because these did (and made quite a stain on my hands!).

Rhamnus cathartica

Note opposite (to near-opposite) leaves, with diverging veins at base; Frangula alnus (syn. Rhamnus frangula) has alternate leaves with normal parallel veins.

OK, so this is common buckthorn which I've never actually IDed before. Glad I didn't eat the berries...

Thank you both!
