What Is This?

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I've exhausted my limited search ability to find out what the heck this is, please help me name it. It has three leaves per node (I guess that's a radial configuration). Cordate (heart shaped) leaves with thorns and doesn't look herbaceous, it looks deciduous (I could be wrong).

Likely herbaceous - there's more than a few nasty weedy types armed like that.

Thanks VV, I can't put it to bed until I get it identified. It's time for the library I guess.

Thanks Resin...yes, Berberis is a good direction. I'll look for species leaf characteristics. More than likely it's a banned invasive, lol.

They look like the barberry weeds I pull out of my yard. The young seedling leaves are rounder like you show. My neighbor grows them to full bushes so I get a lot of them.

Sorry to hear that Loretta, I've never seen a Berberis seedling before. Apparently they're good for cat scratching, you can see long cat hair stuck to the plant in pic #2. Perhaps my felines brought me a gift.
