Peony Foliage Yellowing

Somerset, CA(Zone 7b)

I have one peony in each of three half wine barrels. They bloomed beautifully this year. But I'm having trouble keeping the leaves dark green through the summer; they are slowly getting lighter green, or yellowing. Do they do that in summer? I thought they would stay healthy green until fall. I have fertilized them lightly with MaxiCrop seaweed fertilizer 1-0-4, but it doesn't seem to help. I don't think I'm over-watering, because one will wilt if I miss watering one day. Oh, the one that is yellowing the most, I left all the seed heads on. I read recently that forming seeds takes a lot of energy. Should I fertilize it more strongly? I guess there's not much nitrogen in the fertilizer I'm using, and the leaves need that to get greener, right? Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!
