Hello, I bought my house over 5 years ago which had hawthornes as pictured all along the front beds. They are very established and have not had any problems at all. Suddenly this week the one bush went brown and lost most of its leaves. It had to have been very sudden because I didn't notice it in prior days at all. Does this look familiar to anyone as to what could have caused this? It's horrible that it is in the front yard next to a bunch of established 4 foot tall shrubs just like it, and it's driving me crazy! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Michael
Hawthorn help!
That is what they look like when the lack water.
But with lawn and healthy plants on all sides, the soil probably has enough water. The plant just cannot pick it up.
Pests like gophers, vole and a few others can nibble the bark off near the bottom of the trunk, or eat roots.
Some (gophers, moles and others) tunnel through the root system, causing enough damage to kill the plants.
Some insect or nematodes may be attacking the roots.
Vascular diseases can do this, too. Look up things like Verticillium wilt.
