What is this odd-looking plant (white stem, white flower)?

Toronto, Canada

I tried searching the database and found nothing, perhaps due to my lack of knowledge of the terminology.

This was in the woods yesterday (July 14) in southern Ontario (Canada).

Any ideas?

Try searching fungus/mushroom. There are thousands, but it appears to be a type of fungus. There are a few nice websites pertaining to Southern Ontarios fungus.

It looked like a fungus to me too, but someone I was walking with said he was pretty sure it was an odd type of orchid. I don't know either way.

I have tried fungus websites but have not found one that helps with identification.

Well, if it's not Indian Pipe, it must be an awfully close relative to it. Thanks hcmcdole.

Did you just happen to know this, or do you know of a good website for figuring this out? I have seen a few other oddities, more obviously mushrooms, but been unable to track them down.

I knew about Indian Pipe but not the botanical name..
