I don't think this was a shagbark, but it may have been a young one of that species. I'm thinking Pignut or maybe another variety.
Witch Hickory?
Definitely not Shagbark or Shellbark Hickory - but without seeing a whole leaf (total number of leaflets) or buds, it is hard to separate Pignut from Mockernut from Bitternut and several others.
I don't see any tomentose characteristics, so that eliminates species that exhibit that particular characteristic.
I've heard of witch hazel, but witch hickory is new to me.
I can't believe I spelled which like witch... Pathetic! lol.
