Witch Hickory?

East Bridgewater, MA

I don't think this was a shagbark, but it may have been a young one of that species. I'm thinking Pignut or maybe another variety.

Definitely not Shagbark or Shellbark Hickory - but without seeing a whole leaf (total number of leaflets) or buds, it is hard to separate Pignut from Mockernut from Bitternut and several others.

I don't see any tomentose characteristics, so that eliminates species that exhibit that particular characteristic.

I've heard of witch hazel, but witch hickory is new to me.
