Something's biting into my young cukes

Sugar Land, TX

Hello Everyone,

I got a bit unnerved when I saw this chewed on cucumber on the vine this morning. I looked long and hard for the culprit and came up empty handed. Any advise that you can give will be much appreciated. There are several others waiting to explode and I sincerely hope to save them this fate in the days to come.

Cheers and many thanks to all in advance.

either rabbit or squirrel...cant be deer or the whole thing would be gone, and most of the vine with it ;) lol

All, many thanks for your replies.

I'll be on the lookout for rabbits and squirrels.

Can this be the work of any insects?

Mice and rats enjoy fresh cucumbers as well. Usually rats do damage to city gardens while field mice play in country gardens.

Those are teeth marks. I am with the several people above: Mammals are doing this.

All,

Two more young cukes disappeared this evening. Gone. No trace of a stump or anything.

I'm going to put a chicken fence around the patch.

Cheers and thanks to all.

Note that mice, gophers and voles can get through the open mesh of chicken wire. Also, they might be living in the garden, too. Already on the inside of the fence.
