New scale problems and no experience.

Effingham, SC(Zone 8a)

Hey all. Just became aware of small poppy seed-sized black scale on my weeping cherry, nearby host as, coral bells and some others. Never had an issue before. Thinking they came in with a pair of robins that nest in the cherry yearly or on the winds that we've been having with all this bad weather since spring began. Do I spray (rather large area involved), use systemic so or just wait till the winter and expect that they will die off when in the freezes? New to this problem and this zone. Thanks in advance for your help.

Scale are difficult to control when they are adults. They are protected by a waxy covering that resists pesticide. Systemics work. I doubt they will die off in the cold.

If you can ID the scale and research its life style you can kill the babies when they emerge. Some species just have one generation a year, other species have several.

If you can get a few pictures we might be able to ID it.

Take some samples to the local branch of the department of agriculture, or university extension service.
