moving iris

U.P., MI(Zone 5a)

Hello,
I am moving my garden to a new house in the next couple of weeks. Is it ok to move and plant iris that have not bloomed yet? How about the ones that are blooming now? should I cut off the flowers before I move them. Thanks for your help, Sue

I have never moved irises in bloom. If you can get them in the ground right away, I don't think you have to cut the stalks. Otherwise I would cut them. those which have not bloomed will probably not do so this year. Your season is later than ours, so I would prepare the ground right away. If you can't do so I would pot them up to keep well for later planting.

I've moved them in bloom and cut the stalks to enjoy them in the house, I trim the foliage if I am potting them. I think it helps the plant to anchor and establish new roots easier. They tend to fall over if they are tall ones. If you pot them up and can stake them, you might try leaving the foliage on. I'm usually transporting from NY to KY.
