We bought a house last summer and discovered that it had a raspberry plant. Much to my surprise, the berries turned black. So I figured out it was a black raspberry plant. I know it was raspberries and not blackberries because of how the berries come off the plant. I did some major pruning since it was going wild and crazy. This year it seems like it's got quite a bit more berries than last year. However, the berries are turning red. I can't remember if the berries started red and then turned black last year or not. Do black raspberries go through a red phase before turning black and fully ripening? Or do I just have a very strange plant? I really preferred the taste of the black raspberries over red.
It does seem like the former homeowner really liked more wild type plants. I've got simple 5-petal roses, single peonies, black raspberries (at least I think) and green rhubarb (once again, it's a best guess, but it tastes good).
Black or Red Raspberry?
