Growing cucumber in 5 gal bucket - fertilization question

New Orleans, LA(Zone 9a)

Hi!

I'm growing a burpless cucumber in a 5 gal bucket. I planted it with good soil and compost and have been fertilizing about every 7-10 days with all purpose plant food (miracle grow) but last week I switched to a 18-21-21 formula (MiracleGro Tomato Plant Food).

I'm getting one cucumber every 3 days or so and I'm wondering if perhaps I need to fertilize more often because cucumbers are such heavy feeders and it's in the bucket. Any thoughts?

Hi, Cwade504!

I know bucket gardening (eBuckets in particular), but, I'm just learning about cukes. From the looks of it, I do think you're gonna need a trellis. The plant looks fine. Be care you don't over fertilize it, though.

BTW, I'm from NOLA, too (6th Ward). There's a home girl gardener on the West Bank on DG -- Jo-Ann. She's good people, and sells jams and jellies at the Gretna Market on Saturday mornings. The market right under the overhang, across the street from the Breakfast place.

Go make her acquaintance. She can help you a lot with your gardening.

Linda
