I saw a number of these knots on the limbs of short leaf pines recently. The knot is pretty well covered by what looks like pollen, an orange colored powder.
I have often seen these, but never knew what they were called opr what causes them. Can someone educate me about these growths? Thanks.
Jim
Pine Gall or ??
Yep, a rust disease, maybe a Cronartium species or a Fusarium species.
Resin
Thank you Resin,
Does it harm the tree in general, or is only that spot affected?
For anyone else curious about the Pine Gall disease, searching Pine-Pine gall Rust will bring up quite a bit of information.
