My artichoke plants continue to produce Black nasty artichokes for past three years. They start turning black when they get about an inch. Need advise please.

Are they being over or under watered? Are the leaves fat and juicy?

I think this the artichoke variety.
In Italy, we grow dark purple artichokes and they are very prized.
Do you know what you did plant?
