What Spruce?

East Bridgewater, MA

Seen near Portland, Maine. These don't grow wild around my home in Massachusetts, so I'm not too familiar with them. There were no cones on any trees but near them were these in my photo.

This is a White Spruce, right? It's so different in texture and feel from the planted variety in my neighborhood.

Da Neefster! Glad to see you back.

Doesn't look like White Spruce to me - but I'm not a Mainer.

Thanks guys. The cones confused me.

How can you tell a white spruce cone from a red spruce? They seem the same to me. :)

Red Spruce cones have smaller, more densely-arranged and stiffer scales - quite hard, compared to White Spruce's fairly soft cones.

Gotcha, thanks!
