Critters deterence idea?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm growing my flowers, and veggies in containers. Growing them isn't a problem, but I'm at a loss when it come to critters prevention. I found many of my container with fresh soil, and those tender annuals that are freshly transplanted would be dug up over night. Possibly chipmons or squirrels. Please help share your idea. Thanks.

Lily I put river rocks or seashells on top of the soil in my pots, it's not full proof but does help some (rocks are better). I have tried sprinkling pepper but rain washes it away. I also put thorny cuttings on top, like roses, bougainvillea.

Sherri thanks. I'll try some sharp edges rocks and see if that helps. These critters uprooted my young seedlings. Oh, so happens I went and got a hair cut. My hair stylish told me that human hair if used on flower bed will deter deers and rabbits. And when the hair break down it provides nutrients for the soils. Hah a different type of organic gardening. LOL
