Anyone have any luck growing X Butiagrus nabonnandii, aka 'Mule Palm', in zone 8a? I'm in north TX and have lost 3 smaller ones (one is pictured before I planted it in the ground) with a 4-5" trunk and 6' tall during winter (without protection). I'm going to try one more time this next winter with wrap and Christmas lights this time, but I'm interested to know if I'm kidding myself or if this is doable with a larger, more mature size plant that won't need protection. ( I have Butia capitatas that do just fine in this zone, btw).
Thanks for any input!
