As we head into a new season of hope and growth and renewal, think that every native plant we put in the ground and every invasive plant we remove makes a difference. Go ahead and practice the art of 'gardening backwards': choosing plants not only for their beauty but for the function the plant serves in your little ecosystem. Choose an aster for the different species of caterpillars that feed on it and that in turn feed the native birds and their young. No caterpillars means no birds. The plants in your garden must feed some other native wildlife or the system cannot move forward and is out of balance. Native feeds native feeds native...

Native landscaping is a conscious decision. It can be as formal or casual as any style of gardening. Join the Native Garden Tour of Talbot County on May 9 (see tab on left for more information) and see how gardening with native plants is happening one yard, one garden, one lawn at a time. Start large or start small. It all makes a difference.

Plants of note

Shrub - Rhus copallinum 'Creel's Quintet' - Creel's sumac (sale size: 3 gallon) $44.00

Creel's Quintet is a compact, tough, winged sumac. Reaching a maximum height of only 8-10'. It does have a suckering habit so the clump will get wide eventually. Moist to dry soil in full sun to light shade. This is the female form and the fruit it produces is an important for source for birds and mammals. The beauty in this sumac besides its size is the outstanding fall color of red and burgundy.

Shrub - Xanthoriza simplicissima - yellow root (sale size: 1 quart) $20.00

Xanthoriza literally means 'yellow root' used for its yellow dye by native American Indians. A tough native shrub in the buttercup family. A fantastic ground covering shrub with excellent fall color. Grows 2-3' tall in dappled shade. Propagates itself by underground runners. A good choice for a tough area.

Shrub - Lindera benzoin - spicebush (sale size: 2 gallon, 3-5' tall) $20.00

A true coastal native, Spicebush, has been referred to as the native forsythia. A woodland shrub that can get to 12' tall by as much wide in full sun to part shade. Greenish-yellow flowers appear in April with a bright red fruit in late fall. Fall leaves yellow to golden. Good for naturalized woodland areas, shrub borders, and as a full dense shrub in the sun. Flowers attract butterflies and birds feast on the berries in the fall.

Shrub - Neviusia alabamensis - snow wreath (sale size: 3 gallon) $42.00

New! Snow Wreath is a southern shrub that rivals Spirea in flower and habit. This is a rounded, suckering, deciduous shrub that grows to 3-6’ tall and as wide with erect stems that arch gracefully with age. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Mature plants tolerate some soil dryness.

Shrub - Rhododendron atlanticum - coastal azalea (sale size: 18"-24" tall) $11.00

The leaves of R. atlanticum are distinctly blue-green. The small shrub only grows to 3' tall. Blooming in April-May and the flowers are generally white. Coastal azaleas prefers an acid soil, part shade and sandy, well-drained soil.

Shrub - Rhododendron canescens 'Camilla's Blush' - piedmont azalea (sale size: 3 gallon, 18-24") $30.00

Best grown in acidic, humusy, organically rich, medium moisture, moisture-retentive but well-drained soils in part shade. Prefers a sun dappled or high open shade. Plant in a location protected from strong winter winds. Good soil drainage is essential - raised beds/plantings should be considered in heavy clay soils. Suckering shrub grows 6-8' tall. Light pink, fragrant flowers in April

Shrub - Rhododendron periclymenoides - pinxterbloom azalea (sale size: 1 gallon, 12" tall) $20.00

Pinxterbloom azalea is a deciduous shrub that is native to moist woods, swamp margins. It is a dense, bushy, suckering shrub that typically grows 2-6’ tall. Clusters of soft pink to white to lavender, fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers, each with 5 long curved stamens, bloom in April immediately preceding the emergence of the foliage. Best grown in acidic, humusy, organically rich, medium moisture, moisture-retentive but well-drained soils in part shade.

Shrub - Rhododendron viscosum - swamp azalea (sale size: 1 gallon) $15.00

This rhododendron blooms later than the others which gives you a long season of bloom. Swamp azalea is a low to medium-sized shrub flowering from mid-May to June. Flowers are generally white but can vary from white tinged with pink, yellow, or apricot. Deciduous. Acid well-drained soil, full sun to filtered sunlight. First North American azalea sent back to England in 1680.

Shrub - Rhododendron x 'Choptank Rose' - azalea (sale size: 24-30" tall) $36.00

This is one of the plants selected by Polly Hill from a natural hybrid population found along the Choptank River on the Maryland-Delaware border. It is Zone 5 hardy and grows to about 5-6'. The flowers bloom in late May for us and they are rose pink and white with a light yellow blotch. Of the Choptank hybrids this one has the darkest pink flowers. And it is fragrant too!
