I have on my calendar to cut back my heucheras to 1/4" tomorrow, March 1st. This is one of the hardest chores I have each year. Not because it's difficult but it just seems so wrong! The rewards are amazing granted but when one of my heucheras is just putting out new leaves it just hurts my hears to chop it off.

I am not understanding. Are you cutting off the new growth or the old dead leaves from the previous season?
