How to Dye Curtains

Just moved recently to our new home.
The bedroom has light blue cotton 63" curtains. No backing just slid on rod. I want to dye them purple, but I have never dyed anything before? I have a spare washing machine that I us to launder old rags and work clothes, should I use it for the process? I want to change the color of the curtains from light blue to a dark purple.

What do I purchase?
How is it done?
Any help appreciated.
