Who's looking forward to spring?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

"I thank you God for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees, and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes." - e. e. cummings

DG posted this on my facebook timeline, thought I'd spread it around.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Oh, yes - timely.

12ºF with -11 wind chill now. 3-4" accumulated on our way to 10-14" at the Valley. Predictions of Wednesday and Thursday night lows of -10ºF and -13ºF respectively.

"...for this most amazing day...for the blue dream of sky..."

I'm glad I collected the Hamamelis yesterday.

Bitter cold here today, and yes I am definitely looking forward to warm spring days. This has always been one of my favorite quotes:

“Surely as cometh the Winter, I know there are spring violets under the snow.” (Robert H. Newell)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

excellent thought, aspenhill!

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

OK, here's one from a fellow horticulturist (of sorts)...

"Yesterday the twig was brown and bare;
To-day the glint of green is there;
Tomorrow will be leaflets spare;
I know no thing so wondrous fair,
No miracle so strangely rare.
I wonder what will next be there!"

~Liberty Hyde Bailey

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Here's my rhyme:

Snow and cold, go away,
Far away and stay away
Don't come back another day
for in the yard I want to play.

My daughter wants snow in Utah so she can do more skiing, but it's been in the 40's and 50's there and is supposed to be above 60 on Thursday. How I wish I could send this arctic blast her way!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh...Oh,,I don't know any ditties by famous people.....
SO--I will have to write one--right here--right now....gor you all...

The days are so cold
it's growing old;
It is spring we all await.
Winds gusting in trees
Snow up to my knees..
Me thinks it will be late..

My car's covered in ice
There's nothing nice
to look at any more.
But wait!
There's birds so near
Lovely songs I hear
Not just once--but twice!

PS--This makes me think we should resurrect the old Thread--
"Poetry on the Pile". That was so much fun!
It was started in 2006 and then went to part #2 way way later.
I know I tried to resurrect it a couple times--just to see no action.
It is full of poems and ditties written by people. Some serious...some funny..
Somehow--it never thrived....maybe people were to shy to try and write a
short poem or a ditty...

Sally--you can do all this kind of things. Can you find this Thread please?
It was in the "Soil and Composting" Forum.....hence----"Poetry on the PILE"!
Get it?
Who was the man who started it? I think his name started with an "S"???
AAAAH!!! Goit it! "Soferdig"--right?

Gita

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Sounds like something Steve(soferdig) would do. Hehehe. What a character he is. We were soooo bummed that we weren't able to see him and his wife in Alaska last summer.

I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree.... I forget the rest. Now I will have to look it up. I had to memorize that for a YWCA day camp presentation back when I was just a youngun.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK! Found it....This Thread was priceless.....it started in Oct. 2006.

It all began here....read it as time permits--and then go to Part #2.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/664716/?hl=Poetry+on+the+pile

I came in late on Part #1--but I am all over part #2. I had so much fun!
About every 2 years--I find this Post, haul it out, add a bunch of ditties in hopes it
would stay alive--continue....but it usually just sinks into oblivion.
We have a bunch of new people here--how about adding something new?

Gita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Jan, that is Joyce Kilmer Trees; I wrote about him. I also memorized that poem for whichever grade decided that memorizing a poem was essential to our mental development.

Requested by Gita, you may go here for pile-worthy poems by DG members

From Emily Dickinson

A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period --
When March is scarcely here
.....

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have just read all through Part #1---so many nice poems by so many nice people.

I will continue reading Part #2--but I better get outside and shovel some snow...

Here is one o wrote--

Oh, the wormy, squirmy things I see
They chew all day--all night excrete,
When I peek in my compost bin!
I know that they're all living in sin!!!!

Greasy, gray things squirm around,
Eat everything that can be found--
But in return, one sunny day
To them I'll gladly pay and pay...

On my beds the "poo" I'll spread
Plant my flowers and never dread.
That my poor Garden soil will know...
And my flowers will just grow and grow!

Another "ditty" for you all! Appropriately, created on the spot!

Gita

This Thread is ful of wonderful poo....:o)

I always liked this:
The Amen of nature is always a flower.
Oliver Wendell Holmes
I think the poem I had to memorize was, The Village Blacksmith by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. My part in our first grade play was: "I'm a tall long necked giraffe, when the people all see me, the children all laugh." I think this helped in selecting our mascot for In Your Neck of the Woods. LOL :-}

Hehehe Ric. Glad there's a story behind it.

That Emily Dickinson poem gives me hope that spring might make an appearance some day.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Snow's really coming down here. We have at least a couple of inches so far. Oh well, at least spring is less than a month away!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here too---It is a white World! Could be about 3" already.
They were predicting 3"-6". If this keeps up--it will get there in no time...maybe more?

NO snow plows, yet.....OH..OH! Just as I wrote that--one went by.
Our street gets plowed regularly--as it is a major thoroughfare--and
there are 2 schools on this road as well.

Ohhhh...and the mail truck just came as well--creeping along...poor man!
He gets NO breaks.
I sure won't go outside to get it. Probably just junk mail....

Luckily (??)--I don't have to be at work until 12 noon tomorrow.
Not so luckily---I still get to shovel my way to the car--then clear off the car--
and then the pile at the end of my driveway that the plows leave. UGH!
That will be 2' easily!

Winter Wonderland! Who's running outside camera in hand?
Not me. but I can try to take some shots through the window...

It's coming down fast here too. Everybody send good thoughts out for coleup and Wayne tonight on the paper route. I crept home from Glen Burnie at 2 pm, early closure for libraries.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

It's good that you made it home early, Sally.

The same story here. We have got about 8"-10" now. The neighbor's boy is cleaning the snow for us at the moment. There will be more after the cleaning, but we will deal with that tomorrow. Maybe the rain tonight will clean it? Or maybe not :o(

There are loads of birds eating at the feeder. We keep cleaning the ground around the feeder and put food on the ground so that more of them can get to it easily. The food is buried in snow in no time, then we clean it again. Poor birds. Wish I had mini socks for all of them.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Cardinals sure were happy to see Mark refilling their food! 6 pairs. But the doves seem to have gone to bed early. Maybe that's why you hear doves in the mornings- they are early birds LOL

Here too, we keep looking at the snow piling up and wondering how much will get melted by rain? I'm on dinner duty so I 'can't" shovel right now..

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Donner, we're hoping that the rain tonight will melt the snow, so we haven't done any shoveling at all. It looks like we got about 6 inches, and it's still coming down!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Me too--or I will have to go out there tomorrow morning and chip
all thee ice and snow off my car..Plus the driveway...plus the walkway
from my front door...AAAGGHHH....don't want to.......................:o~

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

well, since we have the snow, I can get away with posting this fun Xmas video

Those pandas are so adorable!! I had to watch that twice.

Just loved the videos,
I had a great laugh at some videos of people in Boston jumping off roofs and out of windows into the huge snow banks. Probably a bad idea but It sure looks like fun.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

ha love the pandas and the snow drift jumpers. and the mayor having to have a serious new conference about it. Sheesh! "Gosh Dad, we were just fooling around...:("

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

We're saying here, that anybody can succumb to the temptation to run out and battle the snow. It takes true moral fortitude to wait and see how much melting we get today with the forecasted warmer air...

By the way I hate how the thread title preserves forever my sloppy typing.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Be strong Sally! We should form a support group so we can call one another when we feel weak and wavering.

Well--V V---we get to see what you look like!

One handsome dude!!! No gray hairs visible.
NOT an old fogy like many of us here...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

David--what a large handsome cat Boris is!!! Da!
What breed is it?

Are you sure Pat is under there? Looks like another hairy cat.....

:o)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

OMG, those photos are priceless.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Boris is a rescue cat and was listed as a Maine Coon. Long hair and very vocal. This is the perfect post for him as he is VERY ready for spring.

VV and friend look so relaxed!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh what wonderful pics.
VV Our last dog was a Beagle what great dogs they are.
Alfie our Carin Terrier mix hates rain but just loves the snow. He just came back in from bounding thru the snow. I just missed getting a great pic. Ric is out there snowblowing paths to the bird feeders and the snow was shooting high into the air as he went.
