Good Garden Centers in the St. Louis area?

Danville, IN

I am planning a spring visit to the Missouri (Shaw) Botanical Gardens in St. Louis. I would love to visit any unusual and/or great garden centers in the St. Louis area, or not too far off the route of Interstate 70 from Indianapolis to St. Louis. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I sent greenbrain a link to this thread so hopefully she'll pop in here and be able to help you.

Thanks Pepper and hello HoosierGreen. I'm just across the river from St. Louis in Madison, IL (5 minutes from I-70) and have been a member of "Mobot" for years. Give me a little time to think about this and I'll get back to you soon.

BELLEVILLE, IL(Zone 6b)

Bonnie from OakHill DLs told me to go visit "Sugar Creek Garden" in Kirkwood. I havent yet but plan to this year. She said they have good prices and tend to carry the newer cultivars.

I receive emails from Sugar Creek and I've yet to go there either. I do like Garden Kingdom, Glen Carbon, IL near the intersection of 157 & 162. (American Bottom) It's the closest one to my home and favorite nearby nursery. It sits next to one of my favorite bike trails near SIUE. http://www.siue.edu/

I also like Cottage Garden Nursery, Piasa, IL. It's a bit out of your way, but worth it. Bought a beautiful hydrangea there and it's still alive after some harsh summers and winters.

Edited to make sure the links all worked.

Where I bought my white pine which is now taller than my 2 story home. Also near SIUE & near the many bike trails that run throughout Madison County, IL.

If you're a cyclist, love fishing, camping, wildlife, and the great outdoors and one of the reasons why I love Madison County, IL is the MCT bike trails and Horseshoe Lake State Park where my family and I love spending our weekends riding bikes, fishing, and observing the native flora and fauna -- and it's free!

Near Horseshoe Lake and right off I-55 before you cross the Mississippi River into downtown St. Louis is Cahokia Mounds and it's free! My family never tires of visiting this place. Beautiful nature trails with wildlife. Ponds, mounds with spectacular views of the river valley, "wood henge" and an excellent museum with gift shop.

Then there's the old Chain of Rocks Bridge where we also bike ride & it's extremely scenic, on the old historic Rt. 66 & it's free! This "island" and bridge actually were annexed by my little town of Madison, IL. I grew up nearby & use to ride my bike to this "island" with my childhood friends. Will has an unusual pic of this bridge. lol

I hope that you enjoy your visit and find some of this information helpful. Let me know if you have any questions. Pics to follow.
