We have several of these pineapple-like plants with yellow balls of fruit (?) What are they and can you eat the fruit?

It is an Aloe.

Maybe Aloe arborescens. It is not poisonous, but the fruit may taste a bit soapy.

I guess it is called wild pineapple and you can eat the fruit- but it is very acidic, the water that it collects is very acidic- so much so that it kills mosquitoes.

I'm pretty sure this isn't in the pineapple family (Bromeliaceae). I'm sorr, I have seen this before but I can't remember....I'll try to find out.
