Trouble sewing knit patch on knit fabric

I am attempting to sew a piece of knit fabric onto a knit baby onsie. I have switched to a ballpoint needle. no surger or overlocker. thread keeps breaking. I am using a zigzag stitch.
Any tips? I had this old Singer serviced before attempting this project.

My 15 month old grandchild had pj with darling design of a drop seat on the backside. The zipper broke after the 1st wash so I cut it out hoping to sew onto a regular cotton knit onsie.
