Any way to use smalti for a large table?

I know smalti is not recommended for a flat horizontal surface, especially a table that you are going to dine at, but is there any way to get around the uneven quality of smalti? I really want to use it for a large table (70 in x 36 in) as the colors are so vibrant. Is there any way to make sure the surface is even instead of bumpy? Or can I add a glass top to it? Any suggestions to make smalti work for this project? Thanks!
