Caught a Swarm in August

Madison, SD

I am a beginning beekeeper...caught a swarm in august...moved tham in to my empty hive.
It is the end of the season here in SD. They have the bottom riser filled but no more.

Do I feed them sugar syrup till they fill the second. Dont really think there is enough in one riser to keep them thru the winter...

any comments welcome

Hi Swede - I'm a beekeeper in Florida so can't imagine how your bee's survive your winters, here in the panhandle we try to leave at least one super just to get through our winters - I would encourage you to combine your swarm hive with a stronger hive then split in the spring - always mix a strong with a weak and I think you'll have more success with sugar patties rather than syrup bee's can work it better - beesource.org is a good forum for us to gather info, check it out thanks, lisa
