I tried figuring this out earlier and got nowhere. I looked at the link, sallyg, and they are so pretty when they go to seed.
Sally -- thanks for identifying that! We get a lot of it in our yard and I've always wondered what it is.
In the south we call this Fireweed, mostly because it appears following burns here. Erechtites hieracifolia
