Well the summer is winding down and it seems there are less and less 'new' things to show. However, I've been able to scrounge up a few new things.

I have a really last bloom of the summer on my Kopper King Hibiscus---
this is IT!
I have cut back all the branches and may get some new growth, but not bloom.
To my surprise--this Hibiscus has made 3 seed pods. It never makes them--
as it is a Hybrid (I think).
I will let the seeds ripen and keep them. have NO idea what will grow out of them.
It is also clean up time....Some leaves have started falling from my maples...
My Cuke plants are done--as are some of the Tomato plants.
The glads have yellowing laves--some of them never bloomed at all?????
YES! Fall is in the air!
1&2--The last bloom of summer on my KK Hibiscus.
3&4--The 1st Amaranth is so stately and tall! Came up on its own!
Different from the one on the other side of my house.
That one's "blooming stems" all hang down--gracefully..
5--The Coleus seem to own all the property around here...
They are everywhere--and HUGE! Especially the speckled one--(Carnival)--it is bizarre!
More---
1--Probably the ONLY "Acalypha" that still exists around here.
Many of us had these last year.
2--It is doing great--in my small bed by my front door. About 2' tall by now.
I will try my darnest to have it live through another winter. it did last year!
This one should be no sweat.

4--Last bloom on my 1st prize Rose...
5--The Hummers are chowing down on these Brazilian Plume blooms.

Every Post Iopen to read--is bolded. When I write on a post--it is normal type.
When I have sent it--and go back to read it--it is in Bold.

Gita, you are probably right about having the only Acalypha around here. Mine got hit by frost before I got a chance to take cuttings last year :o(.
The Chelonopsis moschata looks interesting, Seq. I don't think I have ever seen this plant.

I took some cuttings--none of which made it through to the next season.
Mostly--I wanted the redder-leafed Acalyphas. This one was the browner one.
Flower and Foliage is not carrying it at all this season.
The one above--made it through last winter outside as is.
I put a circular fencing around the plant last fall and filled it with dried leaves.
I also heaped some mulch around the base of it.
In late spring--I started removing the leaves--as they were all wet and soggy by now.
I did not want any rot. And--eventually--I saw new growth coming up. YEAH!!!
I will, definitely, take some cuttings again. They did OK last winter--but then petered out.
I don't DARE dig it up and move it! The ones that died in the raised bed --when I went to dig
them up--I was amazed at the root system they had below ground!
SO--I will not try to dig it up. I would like to move it----it is not in the best place....but--OK.

Yeah Donner, it's Japanese Turtlehead. I got it from Lazy S&S this spring. The blooms look like candy almost :)
Ooohhh Jeff. I like that Japanese turtlehead too. I've never seen it before either.
My chelone lyonii 'Hot Lips' is blooming in the turtle garden right now. I need to remember to get a few pictures before they are done.
Yeah for sure. The glabra you gave me is blooming and it's pretty.
I took a walk down to the turtle garden when I got home from work today and took some pictures.

My garden is slowly going to pot--except for all the Coleus! Man!!!
However--I would advise you not to keep the White Datura.
Are the leaves soft and velvety?
It will spread all over in no time at all. You will not like it.
Its other nAME IT GOES BY IS "JIMSON WEED"
....Look into it--Read up on it...and I hope it scares you a bit....

Gita, thank you for the warning. I googled JIMSON WEED, but it seems to be a different type of datura (Datura stramonium). What I have is a Datura metel. Anyway, I will be careful not to allow it to seed all over the place. The white flowers are fragrant. Yum :o)

Seq, do you know when the 'eggs' are ready for seed collection? How can I tell they are ready? Do I just wait till frost kills the plant?

I am NO expert on Eggplants--but i would not wait till the frost kills it.
The seeds will freeze as well and will not be good to use.
Veggies, naturally, decline when left on the vine. Look for them getting
dark...soft....yukky looking....maybe falling off the vine...
I think that would be when you pick them to remove the seeds.
Wash them in a strainer so you can rub off the gelatinous coating on the seeds.
That can also be left on--no harm. I say this fro me collecting Tomato seeds.
Eggplant seeds may be all different.
Another caveat--never put seeds to dry on a paper towel---you will never get them off.
They "cake" to the paper and you cannot dig them out...
Paper plates are Ok--because they are waxed.

Gita, I will watch them closely :o). Thank you for the warning of not using a paper towel. That's exactly what I would have used, haha!
How are your brugs doing? My 'Dr Seuss' bloomed earlier, took a break, and now has well over 100 buds on it. I think most of the buds will be open this weekend. I am looking forward to it. 'Dr Seuss' seems to produce large flushes of blooms. 'Xena', the other brug I have, blooms more constantly but produces fewer flowers.

My 2 Brugs are doing OK. But--the Dr. S. is just now making it's 1st buds.
It has grown quite large--big leaves and all--but will just now bloom.
The Maya has already bloomed once--and now has buds on it for the 2bd flush.
However--the Maya has had some kind of problems with older leaves yellowing.
That is why you can only see leaves near the top.
I posted the affected leaves -but no one replied to it.
It was just like last year--but this year, I gave not seen any signs of bugs
on it--ever! They just yellow and look sick and I have to pull them off.
I have sprayed them with various things--including "Forbid'. It helped a bit...
One thing for sure--You WILL have a Maya cutting next year.

My Maya also tends to 'flush'. My pink NOID has bloomed constantly and a lot, with constant moisture and mild temps this summer. I came this close II to ditching the pink one in past years when it had horrible mites problems. This year is showing me how well things can resist mites when they are growing well and we aren't getting the horrible heat.
Gita: Somehow I thought I recalled that you planted your brugs directly into the ground for the summer -- but your photos have them in containers. Am I nuts?
Yep! You are "Nuts'....
I plant my brugs Pot-in-pot. That means--they are planted into a 3-5gal.
black nursery pot with holes cut out on the sides (for roots to grow through)
and then THIS pot is planted in a much larger pot--leaving about 1/4 of the
smaller pot exposed at the top. LIke--the big, gray pot you can see in the pictures.
I have NEVER planted a brug straight into the ground.
Can you imagine how far the roots would grow if i did?
And--I would still have to dig them out to bring them in.

Sally--My Dr. Seuss is finally going to bloom. Maya is on her second flush.
Still having awful leaf problems--but I have never seen a single bug...Hmmmmmm

My one end-of-season bloom that has just started blooming is the
New England Aster.
Some of you got it from me at the spring Swap.
Is yours blooming yet?
Of course--mine has been in it's spot for a few years now.
It is, once again, too tall for my liking...bushy too.
And--my Angel Wing Begonia, which seldom blooms for me, is now
in full bloom.
As every year--it grows HUGE! Then in spring--it gets cut back to the nubs...
And it starts all over again. So pretty when it blooms.....

Nice begonia G! My purple asters are starting to bloom now too. Last weekend I ripped out two other asters and threw them in the trash because they had powdery mildew so bad.
My asters have also started to bloom. One clump of asters were eaten by deer earlier this year. So that was a sort of pruning that I wouldn't have done :o). Now those asters are only about 15" tall. It will be several more weeks before they start to bloom. I will experiment with pruning the asters next year to control their blooming time.
Got up early today to take some Brug photos:
1. 'Xena' planted in the ground. Its roots are competing with a huge Nandina and Knowout Roses (behind it). It is impossible for me to dig it out for the winter.
2. 'Xena' planted in a big pot. Not sure why a lot of leaves suddenly turned yellow last week. Probably Hubby didn't water it as I asked him to, haha. No signs of bugs. So I will just leave it alone.
3. 'Xena' flowers
4. 'Dr Seuss' laden with buds. I hope more of them open this weekend when I am home.

Xena looks a paler more delicate pink than mine by a shade, but it's hard to say since they change color too.
This is the time for Brugmansias to flaunt their blooms.
October will be even better....their "Swan Song" of blooming.
Take stem cuttings (NOT tips) at this time. YES! You will have to
sacrifice some blooms! ***Stay above the "Y" with your cuttings.
1--Maya brug--new buds re yellow--new opening blooms are white
2--Maya Brug 2nd flush--all white
3--Maya--2nd day--blooms are turning pale pink
4--Dr. Seuss--finally blooming. It has grown quite tall-but so far--no blooms.

Some other things...The INVASION of the Coleus....
1--The Coleus all have grown bizarrely huge this summer. Whass up?
Buried somewhere in the midst of all this is my deciduous Azalea.
2--Another shot of the same bed--the res satin Coleus and the speckled "Carnival" one
have become almost unrealistically invasive with all their stems and foliage.
3--Somewhere under all this is ONE 14" pot with other flowers--now not visible.
4--Have NO idea what I planted in this bed that never get to see sunlight.
5--Wasabi Coleus in the corner of my small front bed. Geez!
More sublime blooms---
1--My BIG Angel Winf begonia in bloom on my front steps
2--A smaller, pretty Coleus in a small bed (Careless Love)
3--A fall Endless Hydrangea bloom popped open just now.
4--Cat's yellow Celosia hanging in--getting a bit ragged now.
5--Karen's tall, blue Ageratum going nuts too- This is just TWO plants
that I WS'ed last winter. Need to think about where i will want to plant them
next year. As i am sure--i will have a lot of volunteers.
My Dr Seuss has some open now Are the blooms smaller, or are mine small just because the whole plant is on the small side? It had to sprout up from the base.
I have a little tiny Datura self sowed , probably yellow double, growing in a crack of the pavers edging my sunny bed. The plant has about seven leaves and is ten inches tall, and now has two buds.
Gita, I LOVE the color combo of Ageratum with Coleus. Note to self - try the same next year :-).
The 'Maya' flowers are so pretty! The flower color change is very interesting. Which is more fragrant? 'Maya' or 'Dr Seuss'? My 'Xena' is fragrant, but not as fragrant as 'Dr Seuss'.
More flowers opened on the 'Dr Seuss'. I will post some photos when I get home this evening.
Sally, yes, the fragrance in the backyard yesterday evening was very pleasing. Along with 2 brugs, there were also a huge Night Blooming Jasmine and a pot of blooming Tuberrose that I have grown for the first time.

Did your Dr. S. resprout from the base because you left it in the ground
for the winter? if so--I am surprised it lived through it.
donner--While the maya has a nice fragrance--the Dr. takes the cake.
It'd fragrance is amazing....Late--but these blooms on the Dr. S. are still lovely.
It grew nd grew--and had already 2 sets of "Y"'s but no blooms--until this week.
I think it is well on its way to being a very big Brug--so is the Maya.
What to do...........what to do.............
I tried growing one purple Datura in a pot with mixed Coleus.
Of course--one of the coleus was the "carnival"- The Datura tried to grow to daylight
but it just never did well. The 1st bloom semi-opened and closed the next morning.

As pretty as all the Coleus are--i am not sure if I will be rooting more than a few
over the winter. definitely the Wasabi--the AL Sunset--the Careless Love--
and the dark red one (NOT the satin). HELP>>>>>
