Black Hills Spruce?

East Bridgewater, MA

This tree in the South Dakota Black Hills was everywhere, and I thought it looked very much like my familiar White Spruce. When I did a little research i learned there's a White Spruce variation called Black Hills Spruce. Do you think this is what I have here?

Yep, spot on. Any White Spruce growing naturally in the Black Hills is, by definition, Black Hills Spruce.

Did you keep any of those cones? ;-)

All right, I'm on a hot streak of sorts!

No, I didn't keep the cones.

The Black Hills was a strange place species-wise. This Drak-Eyed Junco variation called a White-Winged Junco is only found there, just like the White Spruce. It's like Darwinism in action.
