Diamond or Carbide Bit for Ceramic?

Bethany, OK

I'm wanting to drill some small holes in ceramic containers for drainage. I've read that I should use diamond-tip bits, but they don't seem to make them small enough to suit me for some of my smaller containers, so I want to know if the carbide bits made for glass and tile will work on pottery? I'm guessing the diamond bit is only needed for larger holes...?
