Sad Looking Conifer

East Bridgewater, MA

Is this just an Arborvitae cultivar or something else?

Thanks!

I think Resin will easily set this one straight, but I'll blunder into it whilst he sleeps.

Pendulous trees like that fall into what used to be called Chamaecyparis nootkatensis. I think this is now known as Cupressus nootkatensis, and this would be 'Pendula'.

There are other similar weeping species, but none will be quite as common as the aforementioned.

Yep, Nootka Cypress Cupressus nootkatensis

Distinct in its globular cones with just 4 scales (occasionally 2 or 6).

It need not be a named cultivar like 'Pendula', as many trees in the wild have this shape too. But knowing how the retail nursery trade works, it likely is a named cultivar.

We see a lot of these around here, they are always green and lush. That one does look sad.

Very cool info. Thank you!
