Egyptian Spinach or Molokhia

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

I just started some seeds of this so-called super-green from the Middle East. Do any of you have any experience growing and eating this vegetable? I would really appreciate any feedback.

I never heard of it before, but found out a little by browsing through Wikipedia. Genus seems to be Corchorus, various species but olitorius may be most common. It's the same plant that jute fiber comes from, but the leaves are used in Middle Eastern and African cooking. Sounds like one of those really old, almost wild, edible greens. It might take a lot of water--commercially grown in the Ganges River Delta to produce jute fiber, at least that's what Wikipedia says. Has anyone out there eaten it?

Let us know how it grows where you are, and what you do with your crop!

I have grown Malabar spinach, which is good, as long as you eat the leaves when they are young and tender.

I assume it is a winter/spring crop here?
