Beech Tree Leaves

East Bridgewater, MA

I stuffed this branch in my pocket while jogging. It was attached to what looked like a Beech Tree in a yard. This is not the kind in my back yard growing wild! lol.

All I could get were the leaves, sorry. Any idea what this is?

Not a Beech (Fagus sp.)...

I think you plucked those leaves off of a Hornbeam (Carpinus sp.) - though clearer focus on the pics would help, as would details of the buds.

I know it is too late to cluck about images of the whole tree...

Cool! I'll have to go back with my camera (an excuse to jog too)

I'm thinking Zelkova serrata

Wouldn't argue with that, and didn't wish to strenuously dispute the Beech comparison...

This tree is indeed a zelkova. It's leaves were so much darker than what I've used to seeing it through me, but it had the characteristic trunk shape and orange/pink flaking. Very smooth bark though, which had me thinking beech. I took a few pics I'll post in a while.

Beech bark doesn't flake - at least for the first hundred years or so...
