Learn something every year....

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I had these little seedlings sprouting on top of the soil of a hardy waterlily this spring. The pot was dry all winter in storage.when it went outside these small grass like leaves started growing. I didn't know what they were at first. I thought maybe water petunias or something. Well now I know... They are water hyacinths from seeds! I never even thought about them growing from seeds. My hyacinths bloomed like weeds last summer then stayed out till a hard freeze. The seeds must have fell into the pots. Too kewl!!

Notice the wide grass like leaves at the bottomThen the air filled bases are showing now. They float to the top when they get big enough..Just shows your never too old to learn something new. :-)

So neat Kyle. Who would have thought? I never thought about starting them from seed either.

Who knew??? No wonder they are so invasive down here.

Strange that the seeds sat dry in the soil all winter ...would have thought they were dried up!
