We saw this flower at our local Arboretum. It was not labeled, so I called and spoke with the horticulturist. From my description of where we saw this, he thinks we're talking about a "Garden Poppy" or "Opium Poppy". He said they came up on their own, they didn't plant them! They are about 3 ft. tall and the globe shaped, bright red feathery flowers are 3-4" across! Absolutely breathtaking. Do you all think he's correct? It doesn't look like any poppy I've ever seen, but he says Garden Poppies look different from other poppies. Apparently the person who took this picture wasn't sure either, judging from his caption which said "Is this a poppy?"
Is this a Poppy?
Looks like a Peony Poppy.
Idealpeggy, look like a poppy from where I am sitting. LOL!
Apparently, he was correct. I think it's about the prettiest flower I have ever seen. Thanks y'all!
It's a double-form opium poppy, Papaver somniferum.
