Growing a "traditional" vegetable garden in Puerto Rico

(Zone 12b)

Has anyone tried growing traditional vegetables here in Puerto Rico? I am looking to grow the following:

lettuce ( I read a blog where one grower was very successful with Bibb lettuce)
cucumbers (should be no problem)
peppers (no problem)
Kale (should be no problem)

These I am not so sure about:

Green beans
broccoli
Tomatoes (mine are growing at a snails pace)
Peas

I'm mostly interested in hearing from others who are growing their own vegetables here. We are completely covered on the fruit front. If you have a blog, etc, that would be wonderful.

I also desperately would like to find some manure or any kind. I cannot find it anywhere! If you know where I can find some composted manure I would be so grateful.

Many thanks in advance, I hope to hear from some fellow Tropical climate gardeners.

A good source for seeds that grow well in tropical gardens is from the University of Hawai'i, College of Tropical Agriculture.
