Weird Pine

East Bridgewater, MA

I walked for 4 miles in the woods to look for interesting trees but ended up finding the strangest at my local high school picking up beginner band tickets.

This is freshly planted as it is a brand new school. It had 5 needles per bundle and those funky cones growing in circles in 3s or 5s.

I don't know any pine with 5 needles other than the ubiquitous Eastern White Pine. Is this some sort of cultivar of that or a totally foreign species?

Thanks, as always!

I think that might be that "totally foreign species" known as Japanese White Pine - Pinus parviflora.

I also remember a certain Bay Stater mocking me because I couldn't muster up said botanical name when once put on the spot.

I mocked you? Really? I don't remember that. I'm glad I gave you some grief though, as it keeps you on your toes.

Ditto to Japanese White Pine
