What's eating my tropicals' foliage?

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

I have a Canna and a Bird of Paradise in pots in my garden. Yesterday, I found something had eaten the tallest, newest shoot of the BOP and this morning, the same with the Canna?
2 pics of the Canna and one of the BOP. I'm in mid-coastal SC. DOes this damage look familiar to anyone? Bug? Slug?

Just added some better photos in my comment below!

Thanks!
Deb

Ewwwwww, it does not appear to be leaf rollers, they are far neater in their chewing. My first guess, with the emphasis on "guess", would be some type of caterpillar. You might try dusting them with some BT and see if that helps. Isn't it fun learning about all these new pests in your new home. NOT!

Could it be earwigs? I have a terrible time with them, and they do the ragged damage like the photo shows-

Yes, Ardesia, it's a real blast! LOL. It does kind of look caterpillar-ish.
Thanks, Jo. I would never have thought of earwigs! I'll look that up, too.
I will try dusting and oiling for the most likely suspects.
