May 2, Van Dusen Arboretum, Vancouver, B.C.
The tree was perhaps 20 feet tall. The pale pod-like things were almost as long as my hand.

Magnolia of some sort. The "pod-like things" are the bud scales / stipules.

Probably Magnolia macrophylla - Bigleaf Magnolia - though at Van Dusen it could be something other-worldly...
