I found old daffodils in the woods, ie long ago planted and abandoned, but nothing that pretty. Mine were a yellow double very ruffly but with a lot of green in the bloom and not pretty. (to me)

I suppose the difference in where they are is the same as the way clematis began, most small blooming , some got a big blooming and poof ,, hybrids and more !
