I have a borage plant with pink flowers. How rare is that? Is it as rare as the occasional pink bluebonnet we sometimes encounter here in Texas? I plan to bag the flower head and save some seed. Also, is borage normally self-pollinated or is cross -pollination required to set seed?
Pink-flowered Borage
Borage flowers are often pink in the bud stage and right after opening.
I've not seen pink but have grown both blue and white. I have noticed my blue borage will fade in the sun/heat to almost a pinkish purple color.
If it is only one plant that has delivered pink blooms, it wouldn't be soil related.
I am afraid I don't know the genetics of pollination crosses on borage but would suspect cross pollination. It will be interesting to follow your experiment.
I have many pink borage plants in multiple shades mixed in with the white, blue and purple borage...the bees don't care about the color...but not sure it is very rare...but would be delighted to find if you can isolate it.
