Conifer #2

East Bridgewater, MA

I've been curious about this one in a cul-de-sac at the end of my street. The cone sure says Serbian Spruce to me. Am I correct?

Sorry, nope - it's a White Spruce

Ah... that's it! I went back after posting and thought it couldn't be a Serbian Spruce because the undersides of the leaves weren't blue and had no stomatal bands. The cones are a pretty close match though.

is there something besides the cones that help ID a White Spruce from other spuces (like Colorado which is everywhere around here).

The cones are quite different to Serbian - much softer scales, and more fragile; also more cylindrical, where Serbian has spindle-shaped cones (distinctly narrower at each end).

The needles are shorter and less painfully sharp, compared to Picea pungens.
