Can't x out of the internet and go back to my home page

All I get when I want to close the internet is a ding on the X . I hit the off button and close the lid then , but when I hit the on button later , instead of going on to sign in to my home page , it goes directly to internet . I just went to Dish in the last three months .
I'm completely "Computer Stupid "so help is needed . Thanks .
