I received a Tree-Mail, whose subject began about growing Orchid Trees. This Panama City native stated that she could not keep orchid plants alive for more than four mounths. This was my reply:
Sure you can, Kay. Even though we are both in 8b, you are in a much better zone than I. I am at the upper limits and we are at the lower limits. You are practically zone 9a. I have no more skill growing orchids as anyone else. They are simply epiphytic tropical plants (though I have some that are terrestrial) and need practically the same care as other epiphytic tropicals. IF you get your orchids at a big-box store, typically phalaenopsis, I know why they always die. I give lectures on just that one subject.
I was a dentist in my past, real life and grew plants for fun. Now it is a business, a tiny one, but still something that keeps me busy.
