An Eastern red-cedar (Juniperus virginiana) growing 2 short blocks away from my house had several of these galls on it, and I'm assuming it's Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae. I only noticed galls on this one juniper, so it doesn't seem to be a widespread problem. How bad is this fungus for junipers? Should I think twice before buying one(s) for my yard?
Eastern red-cedar fungus gall
There's a couple big J. vir. at the neighbor behind me. The galls are minimal and don't seem to limit the plants at all. But my crabapple is prone to it- loses leaves starting midsummer every year.
Unless there is a cultivar you want, I'd think you could find many seedlings in the woods.
Thanks, Sally, that's good to hear!
I will be looking for specific cultivars, although I don't know what they are yet. Definitely a native cultivar, and one that is on the shorter and narrower sides.
Sorry about your crabapple. I read that the fungus wreaks havoc on apple orchards.
